Dualcue — reviewer guide

For Chrome Web Store reviewers. This page stands alone: you do not need a Disney+ account to read it or to test the parts of Dualcue that do not need Disney+.

What Dualcue does

Dualcue adds a second, translated subtitle line under the original subtitle line while a video plays on Disney+, the only compatible site. Translation runs on the device with Chrome's built-in Translator API (desktop Chrome 138 or later).

Dualcue is an independent extension and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Disney or Disney+. Disney+ is a trademark of its owner and is named here only to say which site Dualcue works with.

Access for reviewers

The subtitle feature only runs on a Disney+ title that is playing with subtitles. That needs a Disney+ subscription of the user's own.

Everything that does not need Disney+ (the popup, the free plan, the licence check) can be tested on any website, as described next. The Disney+ behaviour is described step by step after that.

Steps without an account (any website)

  1. Open any website and click the Dualcue toolbar icon. The popup shows the FREE badge, the Dual subtitles on this tab switch, the Translate into language list and the meter Free translation today (0 / 20 min).
  2. Click Pro · Unlimited translation at the bottom. You see the Get Pro · $4/month link, a License code field and an Activate button.
  3. Click Activate with an empty field. The popup says Enter a license code first. No network request is made.
  4. Type any text, for example test, and click Activate. The popup says That code is invalid or inactive. This is the only request the extension makes to our own server: a POST to dualcue.gotaskflo.com/license/verify with the code in the JSON body. You can see it in the Network panel of the extension's service worker DevTools.
  5. Please do not complete a purchase on the Pro checkout page that Get Pro opens.

Steps with a Disney+ subscription

This is what a user with an account does and sees.

  1. Sign in at disneyplus.com, open a title and turn on subtitles in the original language in the Disney+ player.
  2. Click the Dualcue toolbar icon and choose a language in Translate into. The Dual subtitles on this tab switch is on.
  3. When playback starts, a small status pill near the bottom of the video shows progress, for example Dualcue: Loading Korean subtitles…, while the native subtitles are still visible.
  4. The first time a language pair is used, the pill says that a one-time model download is needed and shows an Enable translation button. The user clicks it while the video plays. The pill then shows Downloading translation model … N% and finally … subtitles ready. Chrome remembers enabled pairs, so no click is needed the next time.
  5. Result: Disney+'s own subtitle line is hidden and Dualcue's two-line overlay appears near the bottom of the video, in sync with the dialogue. The top line is the original-language subtitle and the bottom line is the translation. The popup switch turns this off for the current tab only, and the player's own subtitles return.
  6. If Chrome's Translator API is not available, the overlay shows Translation unavailable in this browser. If Chrome cannot translate a language pair, the pill says so and the original line keeps showing.
